Landing at Fra Mauro

Journal Text: 108:11:04 to 108:16:30   DivX Film Clip: (6 minutes 5 seconds; 16.2 MB) by Gary Neff.

Apollo 14 - Landing at the Fra Mauro Highlands - February 5, 1971. The 16mm film of the Apollo 14 landing was shot by the sequence camera through lunar module pilot Ed Mitchell's window. The clip begins below 14,000 feet, just before the approach phase of the descent begins with lunar module pitchover. When Antares tilts forward, Cone Crater is immediately obvious at the centre-left of the picture. As they descend, they pass directly over North Triplet Crater at an altitude of 170 feet. The first sight of dust flying across the surface occurs at 110 feet. CapCom Fred Haise announces they have 60 seconds worth of fuel remaining at about 50 feet and they land 20 seconds later. The film continues for 1 minute 20 seconds after touchdown and includes a whoop on the audio from Houston after Mitchell announces they are on the surface, as well as dialogue reporting the shutting down of the descent system and venting of helium pressures. Finally, Fred Haise relays permission to stay: “You're Stay for T1.” (A free download of the DivX player is available on the Web.)
